Cumbrian Aaron McClure looking to repeat home event result in Somerset

Flookburgh rally driver Aaron McClure will make the long trip south to Somerset this weekend, hoping to secure yet another solid finish towards his Ravenol BTRDA Rally Series Production Cup hopes.

After bagging a confidence boosting fifth place at the Malcolm Wilson Rally last month, the Yokohama backed Mitsubishi pilot will have his eyes firmly set on increasing his points tally and step closer towards the top three positions in the championship.

After an impressive performance in Cumbria where he set a string of top three stage times during the event, the 22 year old has admitted to adjusting his tactics to ensure his championship position remains the priority this season.

McClure will be co-driven once again by Welshman Michael Gilbey and the duo are looking forward to the hotly contested battle in the NR4 category. But it’s not all about outright rally wins for McClure in the early part of the season.

“The pace in the Production Cup is very impressive and it’s hard enough getting out front after being in the car all year let alone on just your second event back behind the wheel” says McClure.

“We really need to take one step at a time and not take any risks this weekend as the event has a lot of unknowns which can really unsettle the rhythm, especially with so many shorter stages. There is certainly less room for error down there”.

With the memories of last year’s season ending accident at the event long behind him, McClure has a clear goal for the rally.

“We have to get to the end, that’s it really. Yes it would be nice to come away with a podium but we need to build the points up before attacking at the end of the season when I have more seat time under my belt. The trouble is, it sounds good in principle, but when the flag drops sometimes it’s hard to remember that”.

The Somerset Stages Rally takes place on Saturday 8th April and consists of over 40 miles of competitive driving in the forests around Exmoor.
